High-performance screener for pharma powders

Hygienic screening machine for pharma powders provides high capacity solution to paracetamol processing

Sri Krishna Pharmaceuticals Limited, manufacturer of pharmaceutical products such as acetaminophen (paracetamol), folic acid, domperidone and furosemide, is an established supplier to global pharmaceutical supplier. The company now exports more than 150 niche drugs for marquee global customers.

As Sri Krishna Pharmaceuticals extended its production of API products, a solution was needed for screening API’s during the manufacture of paracetamol at the company’s Uppal factory. During its manufacture, a homogeneous product is made by blending the pharmaceutical powders to give a perfect uniform mixture. Following this blending process, the pharma powder product is screened before drying, granulation or tablet press, to ensure foreign or oversize contamination is removed.

Mr A Bhaskar Reddy, Assistant General Manager of Purchasing and Stores at Sri Krishna Pharmaceuticals said, "We are very conscious when it comes to product quality at all stages of manufacture. Therefore, we required sieving equipment capable of achieving certain quality standards, as well as high production rates. Russell Finex was very helpful in acknowledging our requirements and identifying a suitable solution.”

The solution was a high-capacity vibratory sifter, capable of screening fine pharmaceutical powders, without the blocking of mesh that can occur during such fine screening. It was also important for the machine to be easy to strip-down and clean due to the nature of processing pharmaceutical ingredients, such as API products. To match these requirements, as well as the characteristics of the API’s, a 900mm Russell Compact Sieve® with Vibrasonic® Deblinding System was recommended, and SKPL purchased three units for its production line.

The project has proven successful, achieving the production rate SKPL was looking for. Compared to conventional vibrating screens, the high-performance Russell Compact Sieve® achieves a higher throughput per unit mesh area, and is capable of sieving API products on finer mesh without compromising flow rates. The enclosed system provides total containment, safeguarding operators from dust and fumes. High-quality stainless steel contacts parts enable easy cleaning, and the unit can be easily dismantled and assembled without the need for tools.

The addition of the Russell Vibrasonic® Deblinding System, solves the issue of mesh blockage. This powerful mesh deblinding system applies an ultrasonic frequency, breaking the surface tension and so preventing the fine particles of powder from blinding or blocking the mesh screen. Keeping the mesh clear throughout operation achieves consistent product quality, as well as significantly increasing production rates. The system also prevents the potential loss of good quality product, damage to mesh screens and downtime to clean the mesh area.
